Meeting the Datemakers

For our guest blog this week, we’re saying hello to Datemakers. Find out where to find them, how they’re helping homelessness and why they’re saying sayonara to boring dates! Over to you guys…

We’re Datemakers: a small team of Bristolians dedicated to making boring dates a thing of the past. It’s our mission to shake up what’s meant by ‘date night’, by connecting couples who are tired with the normal dating scene with independent businesses who can host a great date.

The idea for Datemakers was born, like many great ideas, after a few too many Exhibition ciders at the Cori Tap. After a discussion about what makes a great date, Joe and I (Matt) came to realise the limited scope of the dating industry: why is it that the only “good” dates are in expensive restaurants or bars? Why not impress your loved one by going to a stand up comedy night, making your own alcoholic ice cream or learning the saxophone together?

So, after tending to our hangovers we decided to take matters into our own hands. Datemakers was born as an online marketplace of original date ideas, showing off the best of Bristol’s amazing independent business.

But it hasn’t always been plain sailing. Start up life can be tough and Datemakers is the product of two years of entrepreneurial grafting. In the early days, when we were still working part-time, speaking to clients on the phone whilst simultaneously shovelling snow at Bristol Airport was par for the course! Sleeping in a triple bunk bed in a dingy London hostel while developing the business was also something I won’t forget in a hurry…

Nowadays, we’re pleased to say Datemakers is a pretty well oiled machine. This year, we’re massively excited to be joining dozens of other independents at the Harbourside Christmas Market. We’ll be selling our special edition Christmas gift cards, which are redeemable on any one of our 60+ date ideas. We’ve all been stumped for Christmas present ideas before, so this felt like a no-brainer to us.

We’re also proud to be supporting The Marmalade Trust this year, who do incredible work tackling loneliness in and around Bristol. For every gift card we sell, we’ll donate 10% in support of their many projects, like the Christmas Cheer initiative, which brings lonely people together on Christmas day. We’re super excited to be a part of the Harbourside market this year, and we’d love to see as many people there as possible. So come down, drink some mulled wine and check out our gift cards!

Datemakers will be at The Harbourside Christmas Market, trading under the covered walkway on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am – 5pm up until December 16th.
